Success Stories 2011

maddox

My name is Maddox, I am about 1 year old, was found as a stray and picked up by animal control and then given my name by the Humane Society.

My foster family found me there, reported me to Mo-Kan Border Collie Rescue and took me out of that crazy place.

They have enrolled me in dog school and I am presently taking Rally classes and learning to control myself on a leash, come when called and to wait patiently when told.  I have already learned to sit, lay down, get off, leave it, sit up and shake hands.  My Rally teacher says I am making tremendous progress. I love going to class and learning new things.  My foster family is also beginning to start me on agility commands since I’m so quick to learn commands.

I have also learned to behave inside the house.  I don’t chase cats, am patient when being lead through a door or just waiting for the next activity and stay off the furniture.  I am also housebroken but need to be reminded to go outside.

I sleep nicely in my crate at night, but I love to be outside playing with my foster brothers and sister. I haven’t been alone in the house yet and since I’m still a puppy at heart probably should be crated if I do.

I love toys, my favorites are a Kong Wubba and tennis ball. I also work extremely well for treats and am not a picky eater.

I am overly friendly and greet people and other beings exuberantly.  I also love to jump in cars thinking I’m going to class.  I’m basically not afraid of much and am a pretty happy fellow.

I would like to find a forever home and would especially like to continue with classes as they give me a job to do.  I also like to jog with my foster mom and would love to do that every day!

Hope to hear from you soon,

Love, Maddox

Piper

Piper

Meet Piper or Piper Puppy as we affectionately call her.  This spunky ball of fur is confident, athletic, fearless, determined and high energy.   She loves toys and is already crazy about tugging.    She is also very social and wants lots of interaction with her family.  These factors open the door to a great future as a performance dog or as a  beloved pet for a family who has time to keep her engaged in fun and challenging activities.

Because she is very confident she will require a home that is dog-savvy (experience with the border collie breed would be a plus) and is willing to set limits for her as she would like to be in charge, even at this young age.  Obedience training will be a must for her new family.  We have started her on basic training.  In the ten days that she has been at our house, she has learned the following commands:   sit, down, touch and come.  We will continue with her training.  She loves treats and has proven to be a quick study.

She has also been started on house and crate training.  She is doing great with both but as a young puppy needs constant supervision while out of the crate.  We estimate her age at 11 weeks.  She weighs approximately 6.5 pounds and is the smallest puppy in the litter.  Based upon her weight and size now, I expect her to be a medium- sized dog.  While we are not sure of her father’s heritage, her mom is a purebred border collie and Piper’s actions are 100 percent border collie.  Because she likes to play very rough, she will not be placed in a home with children younger than ten years old.  Please consider making this adorable puppy part of your family.

Because of Piper's young age we are requiring the adoptive family to take a puppy class and the next level of obedience. Piper will be adopted with a spay contract that can be viewed on our website with the adoption contract.

Maddie

Maddie

Maddie is a very cute little Border Collie about 3 years old.  She is very petite at about 25 pounds and very athletic.

Maddie moved to a new foster home to continue to work on her shyness.  She LOVES to be chased by her foster brothers and sisters and is learning to wrestle.  She is so fast, however, that they can't keep up with her and quickly tire out - LOL.

She quickly picked up on the routine at her new house and waits at the top of the steps in the morning for a belly or ear rub along with her foster siblings before going outside to potty.  She also likes to chew on the Nylabone and stuffed bones her foster mom gives her.  Maddy does a small 'happy dance' as she waits in her crate for her mom to give her the peanut butter and biscuit stuffed bone before leaving for work each morning.  : )

Po

Po

Po is an approximately 4 month old neutered male puppy.  Po’s mom was a border collie found living in the woods with her six puppies.  Mom and all the other puppies have already found their forever homes.  Because of their size and structure we think Po’s dad may be have been Great Pyrenees.  Po will likely be at least 50 pounds full grown.

Po is fully crate trained and making great progress in becoming housebroken.  He will sometimes even go to the door and ask to be let out.  Po likes playing with other dogs both large and small.  He is learning to leave cats alone.  He does not want to chase or hurt them,  just wants to play with them.

Po enjoys toys and loves to chew.  He will chew up toys that are not “indestructible” and will need to be supervised at all times with toys or only be given toys designed for hard chewers such as.  He loves treats, eats well and is very food motivated.

Po has a medium or “pet” energy level.  He sleeps through the night and can be left crated all day while you work if needed but does enjoy being let out at lunch to potty and play!

caspian

Caspian is a 7-month old, male, medium coated BC that was in the shelter for a month.  He is a BIG cuddle bug, eager to please, house trained, kennel trained, and knows some basic commands like sit, down, leave it, etc.  He absolutely LOVES other dogs and cats so a home with another playful dog would be ideal.

He does great with clipping toenails and cleaning his ears, and is always willing to give hugs and kisses and lay on your lap.

He loves running and jumping in the snow and chewing on Nylabones, but his ears really perk up when he sees a tennis ball! He's learned to bring it back so the game can continue, but there are still times he hopes for a good game of chase - LOL!

Caspian has a medium to high energy level and has been on a few agility obstacles and did well.  He happily goes for car rides and lays down in the back seat quietly on his blanket.  He is neutered, has had all his vaccinations and is on heartworm preventative.

Cayden

Cayden

Meet Cayden.  He’s a beautiful 7 month old border collie mix puppy (estimated date of birth October, 1st).  He is smaller than a typical border collie and is currently in the mid-20 pound range. Cayden will probably stay around 30 pounds as an adult.  He’s full of energy and is looking for a special home with a family who has the interest and time available to exercise his mind and body. Cayden is a high energy puppy, so an active home or a family that is involved in a dog sport will be really important so that he has an outlet for his boundless energy.

In the time that Cayden has been in his foster home, he’s made tremendous progress on his social skills.  He’s been introduced to lots of different people, dogs, cats, and situations.  Cayden is very intelligent and attentive.  He trains well for treats.  He knows several commands such as sit, down, climb, crate, etc.  He is housebroken and pottys on command outside.  Cayden is crate trained and sleeps in his crate at night (although he loves his nap in the human bed before crating for the night!).  His new family will need to continue to work on mouthing, jumping, and recall, as these are areas that can be challenging for an energetic puppy to master.  To ensure Cayden continues to build on his doggy manners, a small refund towards the price of an approved training class will be available to Cayden's new family.

Cayden likes other dogs, but is a very rambunctious playmate.  He would do well in a home with another dog as long as the other dog likes rough play.  He lives with two cats in his foster home and thinks they’re great fun to chase.  He will stop chase with a verbal “no” (or a kitty growl).  He lives with two dog-savvy children, ages 9 and 12.  We do not think a home with younger children would be a good fit.

Cayden likes walks and car rides.  But his favorite thing to do is to play with his toys!  He loves stuffed toys, kongs, his rope tugger, and balls.  When his human is done playing, he self-entertains by running through the house with his toys. Cayden requires about two hours of play time with his foster family (human and four-legged) and toys each day.  Despite all his energy, Cayden does have an “off” switch when it’s time to settle and will lie at his human’s feet with a toy.  He will also crate quietly in the day for a nap.  Cayden will make a wonderful pet for an experienced dog owner!

Dexter

Anyone up for a game? Dexter loves any kind of play- fetching balls, canine wrestling, squeaky toys, or chew toys. Hobbies include going for rides and hanging out with his family. Dexter has great potential for agility or therapy dog work.

He is enjoying learning new commands and is a quick learner. He is already housetrained, has an excellent recall, knows sit and down and is making tremendous strides with wait and off. Around a year of age, Dexter is always ready to play and knows how to use his cute and sweet face to get just one more ball thrown for him.

After a good play session Dex is ready to cuddle up with his people and relax. He gets along with other dogs and especially likes the ones who will play with him. A shorter border collie, Dexter weighs in at a sleek, but strong 35 pounds.

Ball anyone?

Layla

layla

Do you want someone to start your day with the happiest and most enthusiastic greeting imaginable?  Well that would be Layla. She loves to give kisses, snuggle and be by your side.  Seems like her only goal in life is to please and be right there with the family. Layla is a 6 month old very petite  border collie weighing at only 25 lbs. She may be tiny but has a huge heart and personality plus.

She has not been in foster very long but is learning so many things, so fast.  Layla sits, lies down, waits at the door until given the OK.  Her favorite game is fetch and she will now “drop” the ball on command.

She loves the company of other dogs and would do great in a home as a companion for another dog.

Because of her age and sometimes jumping, she would do best in a home with older children. We are working on “no jumping” and she is learning to contain her enthusiasm.

Check Layla out if you want to see the definition of cute, loving and smart.

Blaze

Blaze

Blaze

This handsome stud muffin is Blaze.  He is around 5 months old. He is a border collie mix.  He currently weighs around 37 pounds and shouldn't exceed over 55 pounds when fully matured. He was an owner relinquishment  He is such a fun loving pup to be around.  He gets along great with dogs and cats. He loves to run and play with his foster brothers and sisters so a home with another dog that enjoys to wrestle and play and/or a family who is very active would be great. He does love to give kisses and cuddle. He enjoys chewing on nylabones and occasionally taking the stuffing out of the stuffed animals ;)

He is crate and house trained.  He will go to the door when he needs to go out. He stays in his crate throughout the day when his foster mom is at work and sleeps in it throughout the night. He is currently learning how to walk on a leash (doing great by the way).  He knows how to sit, down, stand, off, and improving on rolling over. He also knows his attention and release word as well. He is VERY food motivated. He has done a few of the agility obstacles and did very well.  He also found the dog walk interesting one day and went all the way across with no problems by himself! (Mr. fearless). He loves to go for car rides. He will sit politely in the back seat or will lie down on his blanket. He does fine around the blow dryer, vacuum and other loud noises.  He does fine with getting his ears cleaned and his nails trimmed as well.

Blaze is a great dog looking for that furever home.

Sophie

Sophie

Sophie not only looks adorable, but she truly is!  She was rescued in southwest MO and is probably around 10 months old.  We're not quite sure what she might have mixed in with border collie, but it has given her a lot of extra very thick and soft fur.  She gets loves to play with other dogs and is fine with cats.  She also really likes kids and greets everyone happily.

More information and photos coming soon as Sophie settles in to her new foster home.

Hank

Hank

Hi!  My name is Hank and two year old BC / Aussie mix.  I came from a rough life before my foster mom rescued me and brought me home.  I have been adjusting to having a family and a life I've never had before; I've had lots of new experiences. But I am doing very well and am loving life now.  I LOVE to show people how big of a heart I have with kisses and snuggles!

My foster mom and I have been working on getting me used to a leash and I've definitely got the hang of it now.  I especially love to go running with my foster mom.

I would love to be in a home with another dog or with somebody who will play with me regularly.  Will you be my forever home?

Charlotte

Meet Charlotte:

Have you seen the ads with dogs in crowded dirty spaces, surrounded by dozens of barking dogs?  Well this is the situation Charlotte was saved from by the HS several months ago.  After several weeks at the shelter, MoKan was contacted to see if we had a foster home with the skills that Charlotte was going to need.   Luckily, we did, so the next chapter of Charlotte's story began.

Once in foster care Charlotte would hug the back of her kennel and only eat or drink if alone.  Charlotte would watch any movement warily and was only comfortable if curled up in corners or in her crate.  Her foster mom saw a glimpse of Charlotte's personality when she discovered that Charlotte loved cheese and would quickly eat anything in her dish that was wrapped in cheese : )

Five weeks later, we are seeing more of the real Charlotte that has been hidden away for so long.  We're beginning to see a glint in her eye and curiosity.  She has progressed slowly from eating alone in her kennel to joining the other family dogs for mealtime. Her body posture is no longer the low slink to the ground and fearful hiding behind furniture.  She has gotten used to many of the everyday noises like doors closing, dishes clanging and the movement of people.  She now lays in the backseat of the car when she goes visiting her foster family's humans and their dogs.

Charlotte still has much progress ahead.  Through all of her experiences and training so far, she has always shown the gentlest and sweetest of natures.  We think she's going to do best in a very kind, patient and low-key home. She will make a sweet companion dog.  We will continue with updates on Charlotte because we know she has more to reveal to us.

Flick

This little cuddly stud muffin is Flick.  He is around 10 months old. We think he is a purebred border collie. He was released by his previous owner to the animal shelter for being hyper.. (HA HA) not the case at all.  He is the biggest snuggler and would love to be a lap dog if you will let him. He currently weighs 28 pounds and is basically full grown.  He does have his happy, excited moments when he sees you walk in the door but after about 30 kisses he is running to the back door ready to go potty.

He stays in a black wire crate when I am at work and at night he is slowing getting transitioned to run loose and sleep next to his foster brothers and sisters.  He is house trained - he will let you know when he needs to go out. He does like to play with a squeeky football that he will go get and bring back to you. He does great with other dogs and cats.  He LOVES people and kids.  He does great on car rides.  He knows how to sit, down, stand, crawl, his attention word (ready), and walks good on a leash.  He doesn't mind getting a bath or getting his ears cleaned or nails trimmed.

Flick is an all around great border collie to own.  He I would say falls in the low energy drive category for border collies.  He does/will need daily exercise and play but yet as long as you include him in your daily routine you will definately have a friend for life that will provide you with unconditional love in return!

If you are looking for companionship, enjoy getting lots of kisses(not very sloppy - small tongue), a 4 legged friend for you or your other pets, needing help staying warm this winter or just a awesome family dog Flick is the one for you!

nilo

Nilo is a 9 week old male Border Collie/Heeler mix. Nilo and his litter mates were being dumped along side the highway like trash by a uncaring human, but luckily a wonderful man who saw what was going on saved them. Nilo is very loving and energetic just like his brother Baloo. Belle

Belle

Belle

Belle is a stunning young female Border Collie with engaging blue eyes!  She is approximately 12 months old and weighs just over 40 lbs. She has a soft, submissive personality and appears to love everyone she meets.

Belle came to Mo-Kan through an animal control agency in Southwest Missouri. She was picked up as a stray and held at their shelter - but was never claimed.

Since moving into our foster care, she has been completely vetted and is now a completely healthy, happy girl ready to start her new life! Indoors, she is a natural snuggle puppy, and will spend hours quietly curled up with her people and other dogs. Outdoors she is a bit timid when encountering new things - but her curiosity usually overcomes her wariness and she soon accepts the unfamiliar.

She is taking well to her crate training and house training. She is discovering the joy of toys, preferring soft squeaky toys that she can carry around and stash in her bed or crate. We are beginning to work on basic obedience; already we can see that Belle is a very willing learner. She is motivated to please people and has an easy going, medium-drive temperament.  She will need a fenced yard to keep her safe.

Updates will follow as Belle continues her education and reveals more about her talents!
