Danny the herding dog. Danny came to me about three weeks ago as an 8 week old puppy, in a two year old’s body. He was supposed to be a working dog, but his owner took ill right after getting him as a puppy and then passed. Danny was taken in by some caretakers who didn’t have time to train him. He spent his first two years going nuts between a small outside pen and a horse stall in the barn. Thankfully they called MoKan, who rescued him. I picked him up the next day. When I went to pick him up, he initially would not let me get anywhere near him (I’ve decided that he was protecting Nicki). He finally warmed up enough to let me take him home. He was rescued as a BC, but my guess is that he’s a Brindle Tri Aussie. He was not socialized at all, it seems. Everything was new. Cars, traffic, people, walking on lead, going to the bathroom someplace other than where he happened to be at the moment, stairs…you get the idea. A lot has changed in three weeks. He’s a really smart boy. We’ve had no accidents in the house for many days now. He’s learned to sit. He’s learned to wait (most of the time) before going outside. He thinks he’s a lap dog now (that’s my fault). He now knows that the food and water have to stay in the bowl and not get dumped on the floor. Ha. He’s learned to jump into the car and is comfortable in a crate in the car. He loves my 13 year old daughter. He’s interested in meeting people now. Not so much other dogs. He will chase a ball, but hasn’t quite figured out bringing it all the way back yet. He’s learning to tug and seems to like it. He is very food motivated if it’s American cheese. I’ve been able to take him to work with me and he’s done extremely well with that situation. Danny needs someone with experience with a herding breed and a firm, but fair, hand. He’s got that tough Aussie temperament. But he wants to please, too. He’s busy. He needs something to do. He’s at my feet wherever I go in the house. He’s still a little mouthy sometimes when you try to pet him, thinks it’s a game , but I think that’s a puppy thing he never got to do. And it’s much better than when I got him. He would probably be better in a home with no other male dogs. Both meetings he’s had with intact males were not great. He’s been good with my 11 year old female BC, but herds her when they go out together. She’s had to tell him off a few times. He’s been very good and seemingly comfortable just hanging out in an xpen in the living room at home or at my feet in my office during the day. Whines a little at night still in his crate, but that is getting better. He loves to chew on bones and is lying at my feet at the moment doing just that. Other toys are meant to be unstuffed or disassembled. Another puppy thing. And he must know I’m writing about him. He just got up on my leg and licked my ear. If you’ve got the time, he’s going be a great dog. Danny needs a fenced yard to keep him safe. Danny is being fostered in the St. Louis area. More about DannyNot Good with Cats
