Stewart is growing and now weighs 23 lbs. He has put on enough height to reach the counter now –shoot, so counter surfing has been added to training needs. He remains bright, self-confident, and quite athletic. He is also a bit of a clown falling off the couch while resting and just sleeping where he lands. He kind of slithers off the couch rather than falling. He had a week with another border collie who was being watched by his foster mother and had a blast. He eventually wore her out but until then they took turns fetching and herding one another. While remaining friendly to all people he has promoted himself to watch dog and has a big dog bark when he is worried about something. He can be stubborn and must be corrected many times for the same behavior like running away with my shoes. The best way to deal with this is to get as many things out of his range as possible as he will go back repeatedly and has a great memory where everything he wants might be. Also, many rounds of fetch and tug of war can smooth the edges off. Did I mention he loves fetch? He also likes to push the ball between your feet as you are walking and is fascinated with pushing the ball through narrow spaces such as the vertical boards on the deck. He does not do well with my timid 9-year-old mini-Aussie and tends to try and bully her so if there is another dog in the home it would be best if it had some experience with cheeky puppies. He and my cat have an interesting relationship. She has now started to run at him, and he pretends fear. He can kennel but he is not crazy about it even though he gets all his meals in the crate. He will be getting neutered February 1st as well as have his second set of shots so then he can begin leaving the neighborhood. He does get car sick. He absolutely must have an obedience class and as much exposure to activities such as fetch, agility, searching etc. because he can get bored quite easily and “hell hath no fury like a bored Border collie”. His house training is progressing. He will pee or poop on command outside, but he hasn’t completely got the idea of not peeing inside. He has a bell on the doors and loves to ring it but not reliable with that yet. Stuart needs an owner or owners who can be firm and consistent with him and enjoy supporting as well as experiencing his growth and learning. Another assertive dog would be the frosting on the cake! Stewart is being fostered in the Kansas City area.
