Jazz is a 60 pound, 4-5 year old bundle of love.  He’s living in a household with a 1-year old Border Collie rescue and lets her run the show. He thinks he is a lapdog, and we are working to curtail his excessive need to take a running leap into someone’s lap.  He knows basic commands such as sit, shake, down (with enticement), rollover, and move back.  He is crate trained, housebroken, comes when called, and is still working on wait and on leash training with rests.  He’s not too interested in toys unless filled with treats, but he has recently been playing with a frisbee and bounces and retrieves his ball (hoping he knocks some treats out of it).  Jazz is even tempered and tends to go with the flow. He is happy, very loving and thrives on closeness to humans.  He does not like being in the rain and is terrified of fireworks. He gets along well with every dog we’ve tested, barks at cats, loves all humans, large and small, and chasing squirrels is a favorite pastime.

We understand that Jazz spent much of his prior life outside and we believe he had a male human in his life who passed away.  He loves all in our household but is especially close to the male humans.  Jazz came into MOKAN’s care in late August 2023.  We don’t believe he had the best of care but also don’t believe he was excessively mistreated.  We don’t think he had much access to toys, and it is taking a while for him figure out what to do with a toy.  When he came to us, we didn’t have any information on shots, so we started from square one.  That’s when he tested positive for heartworm disease.  He has been in treatment since September 2023 finishing the last of three injections in December 2023.  He shows absolutely no symptoms, and, In January 2024, his microfilaria test came back negative (clear blood) and, per doctor’s order, we are waiting a significant length of time to be retested for heartworm disease.

We don’t think his past life was easy, but he is adapting magnificently.

Jazz is being fostered in the Kansas City area.
