Zip is the most awesome dog. Not only is he beautiful, but his personality is beautiful as well. He is gentle, loving, mild-mannered and just starting to learn that life can be good. Life for Zip did not start well. After severe abuse in the second home, he was dumped along a farm road and later picked-up by animal control where he dwelled in a shelter. His first home went to the shelter to retrieve their own dog and saw Zip there and brought him back home. He was given to another family and after a month, they placed him on a swap page to try to rehome him as he was afraid of them. MoKan contacted the owner and she agreed that placing him in rescue was the best thing for Zip. Needless to say, Zip has a tough time trusting people. The desire is definitely there, but will take patience and time to help him bloom into the dog he is inside. He has so much potential. Sudden movements startle him and he will retreat to a place he has deemed safe. He is less trusting of males (probably stemming from the abuse), so men will have to work just a bit harder for him to trust! He is learning in foster care that people can be a good thing as they give you treats, cuddles, and belly rubs. He has progressed from totally being in a crate all the time to using the crate only at bedtime. He is learning that coats and blankets are not as scary as they once were. And that hanging out in the middle of the living room with everyone is not a bad place to be. He is very gentle and can be very loving once you have won his trust. His recovery has been amazing, but still has a ways to go. Some days we see awesome progress, but dogs can have bad days too! (He can slip back into fright mode over something like the toaster popping up.) He LOVES dogs (way better than people sadly) and will look to them to help him make decisions whether a situation or person is safe. He has wonderful doggies manners. Zip was very underweight when he came into rescue, however he takes food very gently from your hand and has shown no food aggression at all. He loves to play fetch, mostly as an active bystander, running with the others is much more fun for him and he could care less if he is the one retreiving or not. Let's talk about what his new home would look like. He will need a fenced yard and a family without young children would probably be best as sudden movements frighten him. He will need a stable, low-keyed, calm home where predictability is the norm. His new family will need to adminster mild correction as harsh will further set him back in fear. His new family should be someone who can recognize and appreciate his "TRY" and be patient with where he is today. Someone who can help him build his confidence and can continue his progress. He will definitely be worth the effort put into him! Did I mention he LOVES dogs?!! A fun, furry, fourlegged friend would be wonderful for him too! He is under a year old, up-to-date on vetting, mircrochipped, neutered and on heartworm prevention. He is crate trained and sleeps there at night. If you think Zip would make a wonderful addition to your home, please fill out an application for him at http://www.mokanbcrescue.org/php/new_adoption_form.php
