Seamus is the happiest dog you will ever meet!  If you’re looking to add a big, sweet, bundle of joy to your life, he’s the man!  Seamus is a 60-65 lb border collie mix.  We think Seamus is approximately 8 years old.  He came to us from the euthanasia list of a Kansas shelter who listed him as unadoptable due to medical conditions and lack of space at the shelter.

Seamus had a lot of hair loss, bad skin and ear infections and dental disease when we got him.  His infections have cleared up with medication and his dental disease was treated with a cleaning, a few extractions and even some root canals on his lower canine teeth.  He is missing all of his incisors but it doesn’t slow him down!

Seamus loves everyone.  His whole body wiggles when he meets new people and he loves cuddles, petting and scratches.  He is good with other dogs and has enjoyed playing with other dogs in his foster home.  (He is occasionally a bit possessive over a high value toy or treat.  This has been rare but caution should be taken!) He’s indifferent to cats. Seamus loves all toys and enjoys a good game of fetch.  But he’s also been seen happily just playing by himself, tossing toys around and chasing after them.  He loves to chew all things chewable-nylabones, rawhides, stuffed kongs, bully sticks etc.  He has also shown increasing interest in the baby pool.

He is fully housebroken and crate trained.  He can sleep in a crate or loose in the house.  He’s very good generally but not above stealing a bag of treats and eating them all! A comfortable couch is a must for Seamus as it’s one of his favorite places to nap!  Seamus is great in the car and in the bath tub but does pull on the leash!  He knows how to sit and is very food motivated and could easily learn more.  Sometimes he “talks” when he gets excited or impatient.

Now that I’ve convinced you he’s perfect, here’s the down side, if you want to call it that.  Seamus’ skin condition was left untreated for quite a long time.  Although his skin and coat are much healthier now and some of his hair is growing back it may take many more months to know how much hair he will get.  There is a  chance he will never have a fully normal coat.  His skin condition is allergy related and will always require some kind of maintenance therapy.  Right now he takes a medication called Apoquel one daily and this can be $50/month or more depending on pharmacy (hopefully there will be a generic someday!). He also gets a medicated bath to help control yeast every 7-10 days.  He has done very well on this regimen.  Other options for him may include Cytopoint injections or allergy testing and immunotherapy.  Neither of these are inexpensive.  Long term steroid use will not be considered acceptable treatment due to the side effects of chronic use. He does not appear to have a food related issue and has no special dietary requirements at this time.  Because much of his hair loss is concentrated at the back half of his body it’s likely that fleas played a role in part of it.  He will need to stay on year round quality flea prevention.

Seamus is also afraid of thunder but medication seems to help, although we’ve not had many storms to fine tune the best option for him at his time.

This boy is a true gem and can make anyone smile.  He never has a bad day and takes everything in stride.  He’s now ready to find his perfect home to give him all the love he deserves.

Seamus is being fostered in the Springfield, Mo area.
