Tucker is an approximately 1 1/2 year old male border collie, neutered, and up to date on shots. He was rescued by MOKAN in November from a shelter in Wichita, arriving with a broken femur. X-rays also showed buckshot in his back legs. Surgery was done on the broken femur and a pin put in place in mid-November. The pin was removed March 12 and Tucker is on his way to living a normal border collie life! Tucker’s first few weeks were spent in and out of the vet’s office, wearing a cone, getting neutered, taking sedatives and pain pills, with restricted activity. Tucker, no longer in pain, is starting to thrive and is learning how to be a dog again. We have seen his personality develop and improve over the time he has been with us. He is an independent guy and not really what we would call a cuddle bug.! He loves the outdoors, tennis balls, squeaky toys and bones, walks (does well on a leash), and is treat motivated, crate trained and house broken. Tucker likes to be around his foster parents and wants them to “play” with him in tug of war, ball toss, etc. He may have some moments of high energy, playing either independently or with his foster parents, but then will relax either by laying on one of his beds or retreating to his crate for quiet time. The door is left open and he goes in and out as he wants. He sleeps all night in his crate without a sound. He is doing well in meeting and greeting others, with friends put on notice to give him his space at first, and instructions not to touch his feet or rub his back area. He does well around most dogs but has not been cat tested. We hope to get him tested soon. Tucker will need someone familiar with the border collie breed, who will continue to be patient and give him time to earn their trust and keep up with his training. Obedience and other classes would be a great thing for him! Tucker still doesn’t necessarily like his feet or his back legs touched, including wiping off wet and dirty feet. He is wary of some loud noises, I.e. vacuum cleaners. Visits to the vet can be scary. One will need to learn to read his body language and facial expressions. He does have a snarly/big grin look that he will make as he plays or to let you know he doesn’t like something. We are able to give him major body and belly rubs, and brush him gently with treats in hand. He has some typical border collie traits/quirks as far as his focusing/zoning in on certain things, like cars driving by, and will need more work to help divert his attention. He is very treat motivated and knows sit and down. Tucker is being fostered in the Kansas City area.
