Vincent is a 6 month old border collie that was recently found as a stray. He is skittish around people and will take several days or longer to warm up. Once he gets used to his surroundings, he enjoys laying on the couch while you watch TV and playing with toys in the house and the yard. He wants to be “in the mix” but is very cautious. When people are walking around the house he gives them a wide berth as to not be stepped on but when you get down with him on the floor he wants to come up and be petted. He is excellent with other dogs, taking behavioral cues from those who would like to play and those who would rather be left alone. He would prefer to be in a home with another friendly dog who he can be buddies with and take cues from (if you have a wonderfully behaved adult dog, this puppy wants a mentor!). Would prefer to be placed in a multi-dog household. Vincent is medium to high energy and he does a lot of things that normal puppies do. He’s playful and goofy. He loves to play fetch (still working on bringing it back). Likes to chew on things (easily directed to appropriate objects). He is in the process of crate training but it is slow going. He does not enjoy being confined and does not settle on his own. Foster family is working on rewarding for calm behavior in the crate and in the house. If he must be confined it should only be for short periods of time as he does act frantically and destroys things that are left in his crate (he only gets Kongs and super chewer toys with him at this point). Since he can’t be crated without much distress he is currently left with his dog buddy (a 2 y/o border collie) in a tidy room while foster parents are work and he seems to do just fine, no accidents or chewing of undesirable objects. At night he sleeps under the bed in a tidy room with our other two dogs and he doesn’t have any issues. Vincent is mostly potty trained but he will need to be taken out frequently to avoid accidents. Being a stray, house training was foreign to him but once he got the idea he seemed to do just fine. He is not yet fully leash trained, he will walk on leash in the house and in the yard without a problem. He would do best in a home with a fenced in yard. Vincent is neutered and up to date on vaccines. He is untested on cats and good with respectful older quiet children. He still needs quite a bit of training and introduction to new experiences in a positive way to build confidence. He will need to be enriched with toys and activities daily. Given the right family he could be a wonderful companion. Vincent is being fostered in the St. Louis, Mo area.
